Edward H. Kott

May 13, 1936 — October 17, 2025

Calgary, Alberta

We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Edward H. Kott, at the age of 89 years.

Apart from working most of his life in sales for Gilbey-Palliser Distillers, he also served on the Board of Directors at Calgary Co-op for many years.

Ed will be most fondly remembered for his intelligence, his sense of humour and his sense of style, and for his love and devotion to his children: to Randal, his son who predeceased him, and to his daughter, Lauren. There wasn’t a sacrifice he wasn’t ready to make or a mountain he wouldn’t move for his children. There simply couldn’t have been a better dad. Ed was so generous with his time and energy, especially when it came to family and friends.

He was always a builder and a fixer: born on a farm in northern Alberta, these skills seemed to come naturally to him. He built furniture, wooden toys, a treasured doll crib, two playhouses, bookshelves galore and even a holiday trailer for his family. He developed two basements, built two garages and numerous decks, to name but a few projects. He loved fine woodworking, and delighted in the hours he spent in his workshop. His inlaid wooden chess boards are works of art. And if something was broken around the house, Ed could fix it.

He had a great passion for history, politics, and news, and would find nourishment in his many travels as a result. He challenged himself to get his private pilot’s license, and he passed with flying colours (he’d appreciate the pun). Ed never stopped learning, loved to read, and was proud to have been awarded his B.A. in History later in life.

He lived a life abundant in love, and for that he will never be forgotten, and missed more than words can say. We are comforted knowing he’s at peace, and that he’ll always be near us.

There won’t be a funeral, at Ed’s request. He asked that any donations to go to The Last Chance Cat Ranch of Lethbridge, where two of his beloved grandkitties originated. Our deepest thanks to the kind, compassionate staff at Cedars Villa.

Fly free, Dad, and enjoy your reunion with Randy, the Babas and Gidos, and everyone in heaven who you’ve missed. We know you’ll volunteer to be the grillmaster at the reunion BBQ, everyone will be so happy to see you again, and as always, you’ll be the life of the party.
