Ellen Velie passed away on June 10, 2026, in Calgary, Alberta, after a brief illness, surrounded by her loving family. Born on January 25, 1937, in Hamburg, Germany, Ellen’s journey through life was marked by resilience, dedication, and a steadfast commitment to those she loved. Ellen emigrated from Germany in 1965, initially moving to Peace River, Alberta. In 1978, she settled in Cochrane, where she made her home and remained rooted for decades.

Ellen’s personality was uniquely memorable; she possessed a great but dark sense of humor and was known as a “straight shooter,” never afraid to express her views. Her strength, determination, and sometimes abrasive demeanor were qualities admired and loved by those who knew her well. She loved animals, gardening and watching birds. Family was at the heart of Ellen’s life. She was immensely proud of her grandchildren, who were truly her pride and joy. Ellen is survived by her children: Heidi (Bob) of Atlanta, Georgia; Audrey of Ponoka, Alberta; and Jean of Cochrane, Alberta. Her beloved grandchildren, Kirsten of Boston, Kaitlen of Atlanta, Cameron of St. Louis, Brian of New Zealand, Casey of Edmonton, and Kyle and Ingrid both of Cochrane, carry forward her legacy. Ellen’s brother Wolfgang Holly of Kamloops, British Columbia, also survives her. She was predeceased by her parents, Katie and Otto, whose memories she cherished. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cochrane and Area Humane Society or your local SPCA.
