Garry Peter Sutherland, a beloved father, devoted firefighter, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2026, in Cochrane.
Garry’s remarkable 38-year career with the Calgary Fire Department was more than just a profession— it was a calling that brought him immense pride and a deep sense of belonging. To Garry, the fire department was not merely a workplace but a family, a community where bonds were forged through shared courage and commitment.
Garry was a man of strong opinions, sharp wit, and an even sharper sense of humour. If Garry was in the room, you knew it. He was the life of every gathering, usually found with a whiskey in hand, commanding the room with stories of his latest exploits. Travel was a passion he nurtured deeply alongside his late wife Heather, with whom he explored 53 countries. Their adventures not only broadened their horizons but enriched their lives with friendships that stood the test of time.
Garry’s interests were as varied as his experiences. A devoted fan of both the NHL and the Toronto Blue Jays, he also found joy in the outdoors through hunting and fishing and could be seen swinging a golf club all summer. Each pursuit spoke to his adventurous spirit and love of connection, whether with nature or community.
Family was the heart of Garry’s world and his proudest accomplishment. He is dearly survived by his daughters Dana Sutherland (Michael Bishop) and Meghan Tayfel (Mark), who carry forward his legacy of kindness and strength. He was also a proud grandfather to Sidney, Isabella, and Colin, and could often be seen in the stands at musical performances and basketball games. Garry was predeceased by his loving wife of 52 years, Heather, with whom he shared a lifetime of memories, laughter, and unwavering partnership.
Garry was a force of nature who lived on his own terms. He leaves behind a void that can only be filled by the tall tales and glasses raised in his honour.
A Celebration of Garry’s life will take place at the Cochrane Ranchehouse, 101 Ranchehouse Rd, Cochrane, AB (There is no access from Highway 22 you must enter from Sunset Dr.) on Thursday, June 11 from 2:00-4:00PM with tributes starting at 2:15PM. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Calgary Firefighters Burn Treatment Society.
