It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of George Garry Chornoby of Cochrane Alberta on April 9th, 2026 at the age of 90 years.
George passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of his family.
George was born on June 1st, 1935 in Sclater, Manitoba. He grew up with a large family and helped on the family farm until he left home at the age of 16. George worked for CP Rail before joining HBM&S Company where he spent his career as a miner and supervisor in Flin Flon, Manitoba.
George met and married the love of his life Pauline in 1958 and raised their 4 children in Flin Flon. They retired to Cochrane, Alberta in 1993. After Pauline passed away in 2023 George spent the last 2 years of his life at Chinook Care Centre in Calgary.
Together Pauline and George enjoyed their retirement years with a variety of activities including: sharing quality time with family and friends, travel, camping, golf, square dancing and curling. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, gardening and collecting. George also enjoyed volunteering as a Marshall at the Cochrane Golf Club.
George was a lifelong active member of the Catholic Church and was a 4th degree Knights of Columbus member for many years.
George will be deeply missed by his children Patricia (Larry) Mogck, Gail (Scott) Starchuk, Brian (Kathy) Chornoby, Brenda (Chris) Zanetti. Grandchildren: Kendra (Ben), Justin (Carly), Jenna (Robby), Brandon (Danielle), Tyler, Jamie, Zachary (Kelsey) Maxwell & Ty. Great Grandchildren: Lilliana, Mila, Morgan, Brooks and Tatum. Sister: Evelyn Sishka. And numerous other extended family and friends.
Predeceased by his wife Pauline, parents; George & Victoria Chornoby, and 12 brothers and sisters.
Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Catholic Church (10 River Heights Dr, Cochrane, AB) on Thursday April 23rd, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. by Father Joe Glaab. Interment will follow at St. Andrew’s Cemetery in Cochrane.
Very special thanks to Dr. Alexandra DeJong and all the wonderful staff at Chinook Care Centre for all their exceptional care and support over the course of the last 2 years.
Also, special thanks to Dr. Danielle Carpentier and the Staff on Unit 72 at the Rockyview Hospital, for their care and compassion during George’s final days.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Calgary.
