George Alton Mathers, born on February 4th, 1942, passed away peacefully on July 3rd, 2025, at the age of 83. A lifelong resident of Calgary, Alberta, George was a man of service, skill, and spirit, whose legacy will be deeply cherished by all who knew him.
George proudly served as Fire Chief for the Calgary Fire Department, dedicating decades of his life to protecting others and leading with strength, integrity, and compassion. Beyond his career in public service, he was a master gunsmith and a well-known figure in the firearms community — respected for both his craftsmanship and his knowledge.
A passionate gun collector and marksman, George spent countless days at the range, on his motorcycle, or out in nature camping with those he loved. His love of the outdoors and his quiet wisdom left a lasting mark on everyone fortunate enough to share in those moments.
George is survived by his beloved grandson Jessy Mathers and his great-granddaughter Violet Mathers, both of whom brought him immense pride and joy. His memory will live on in their hearts, and in the stories told around campfires for generations to come.
A memorial service will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion #285, 9202 Horton Road SW, Calgary, AB, on Wednesday, August 20th, 2025 at 2:00 pm. Friends, family, and former colleagues are warmly invited to attend and celebrate a life well lived.
