Born on September 17, 1957, in St. John’s, Newfoundland, John lived a life marked by creativity, resilience, and a profound dedication to others.
John’s career as an actor and entertainer was distinguished by his versatility and commitment. He held many roles across commercials and movies and was a proud member of ACTRA, contributing to Canada’s vibrant arts community with his larger-than-life personality and infectious humor. Beyond the stage and screen, John’s passion for service led him to complete a course in Social Work in 2025—a field close to his heart where he aspired to support and uplift those in need.
Among his many proud accomplishments was being a Torch Bearer for the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics, a moment that reflected his pride and commitment to his country. John was also a double lung transplant recipient in 2002, a pivotal event that extended his life by an incredible 23 years. This journey not only underscored his strength but also brought him many friends and allowed him to become a mentor to numerous transplant survivors, offering hope and guidance to those navigating similar challenges.
John was known for his outgoing nature, sharp wit, and genuine warmth. His interests included karaoke and spending cherished time with friends and fellow transplant survivors—connections that enriched his life and those around him. He leaves behind a wide circle of loved ones whose lives he touched deeply.
John is survived by his siblings: Rosemary Byrne of Avondale, Newfoundland; Cathy (Dan) Courcy of Cochrane, Alberta; Linda (Don) Mackey of Calgary, Alberta; Frank Byrne of Harbour Main, Newfoundland; Mary Byrne Jamieson of Swift Current, Newfoundland; Terry (Teresa) Byrne of Calgary, Alberta; Chris (Tracy) Byrne of Nanton, Alberta; and Mark Byrne of Port aux Basques, Newfoundland. He also is remembered fondly by numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Ellen Byrne (née Hennessey), his sister Barbara Byrne, and brothers-in-law Gayland Thorson and Roger Jamieson.
In honour of John’s deep commitment to organ donation, it is encouraged that those who wish to celebrate his legacy consider becoming organ donors themselves. Donations may also be made to the Canadian Transplant Association, supporting the cause that was so important to him.

He will be remembered not only for his talents and achievements but for the generous spirit and laughter he shared with all who knew him.
