Obituary

Joyce Irene James, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on December 2, 2025, in Calgary, Alberta, surrounded by her loving family. Born on June 13, 1929, in London, England, Joyce lived a vibrant and fulfilling life that touched the hearts of many.

Joyce's journey began with her education at Claybury Hospital, where she graduated as a psychiatric nurse in 1960. Her career spanned both England and Canada, reflecting her unwavering dedication to caring for others. Her sharp wit and bright mind remained clear until the very end, a testament to her spirited personality and love for life. Alongside her nursing career, Joyce pursued her passion for the arts by attending art school, showcasing her immense talent in various forms of creative expression.

She was not only a gifted artist but also a master of crafting unique costumes with odds and ends, a skill that delighted her family and friends alike. Joyce delighted in swimming, knitting, art and the beauty of calligraphy. Her handwriting was a marvel—so perfect that it often left those who beheld it in a delightful confusion. A true game show wizard, Joyce also enjoyed playing Scrabble and other word games, bringing laughter and friendly competition to her gatherings.

Joyce's adventurous spirit led her to travel extensively in her youth, creating cherished memories that would stay with her throughout her life. She often shared those stories with enthusiasm, captivating her loved ones with tales of her adventures.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Brian, with whom she shared an enduring and loving marriage of 64 years. Together, they raised five wonderful children: Caroline (Rob) Stewart of Calgary, AB; Marion (Ron) Wiebe of Cochrane, AB; Rees (Trish) James of Camrose, AB; Bryn (Cherry) James of Penhold, AB; and Rachel (Charles) Kitts of Dartmouth, NS. Joyce was immensely proud of her family, and her legacy lives on through her 14 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, all of whom were a source of joy and pride in her life.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, George and Jesse Jackson, and her sister, Audrey. Their memories remain a cherished part of her story, celebrated by those who loved her.

As we remember Joyce Irene James, let us hold dear her sharp humor, artistic brilliance, and unwavering love for her family. Her spirit will forever be a guiding light, illuminating the lives of all who were fortunate enough to know her.

Honouring Joyce's wishes, there will not be a funeral. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Save the Children Fund.
