In Loving Memory of MaryLou Vickers
MaryLou was born at home in Canyon Creek, Alberta, where she spent her early years with her loving mother, her siblings, and a close extended family. She fondly recalled teaching herself to speak Cree so she could understand what the old aunties were saying, a reflection of her curiosity and connection to her roots.
In 1956, MaryLou married Wilfred, and together they raised a family through the many seasons of life. After living in various communities throughout the Peace Country, they returned to High Prairie and purchased an acreage just outside of town, where they hosted many memorable family gatherings filled with laughter, lively conversations, and of course music.
MaryLou was a devoted mother who loved her family fiercely. Whether working inside or outside the home, she took pride in working hard and always doing her best. She loved gardening, cooking, playing guitar, and singing her favourite songs. Her sing-alongs brought family and friends together, and it is impossible to think of MaryLou without remembering her guitar in hand and a song on her lips.
MaryLou said goodbye to Wilf in 1996 and missed him every day thereafter. In her later years, she battled Alzheimer’s disease, which gradually took away her memories, but all the cherished moments she created will live on in the hearts of those who knew her.
MaryLou leaves behind her children, beloved grandchildren, dear sisters, extended family, and many friends who will remember her kindness, strength, humour, feistiness, and willingness to help wherever needed.
Rest peacefully, MaryLou. We hope there is a guitar waiting, a pot of good coffee brewing, and Wilf ready to welcome you home.
