It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of Patrick Joseph Coyle, beloved husband of 61 years to Mary, on November 21, 2025.
He was born on April 20, 1940 in Gortin, County Tyrone, Ireland. He is survived by his five children, Gráinne, Fiona, Yvonne, Patrick, (Paula) and Barry (Barbara), his 11 grandchildren, Aaron, Sinéad, Pierce, Brynn, Dillon, Killian, Aiślin, Teghan, Cayla, Liam and Connor and one great grandchild, Aiden.
He is survived by his sister Bridie and predeceased by his parents Susan and Peter, his siblings, Brendan, Tony, Roseleen, Jimmy, Louie and Colm.
He was a Member of Amnesty International, Former Board Member of St. Mary's Parish Council, Former Board Member of Calgary Food Bank, Former Board Member of the Irish Cultural Society. He was also a member of the Civil Rights movement in Ireland and was committed to a non-violent end to British rule.
He was a Carpenter who trained in Ireland and obtained his Guild of Master Craftsmen Qualification. When he moved his family to Canada, he began to specialize in log work and historical building restorations. He built many custom homes around Cochrane and was responsible for some of the distinctive landmarks in the town such as the Original Coffee Traders building and the Rocky View Brewing Company building as well as St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He moved and restored the Westerson Cabin and the Cochrane Historical Museum, both in the Cochrane Ranch. He completed many other historical restorations throughout the province and received the BC Premiers Award for a restoration that he completed on the Mount Assiniboine Lodge that was one of his most challenging projects but where others saw challenges and impossibility, he saw the opportunity for innovation and resourcefulness.
Above all he loved his family and built second homes in Dolan Springs, Arizona and Wasa Lake, BC where they could all gather and create many wonderful memories. In 2014 he was diagnosed with Parkinsons Disease, and he fought the disease for over 10 years with the same quiet dignity and grace that he always lived and was truly inspiring to those around him. He will be forever missed and loved, Ar aheis Dé go raibh a anam.
We would like to thank the team at Rocky View Private Home Care for the kindness and care they provided along with the nurses from the AHS Palliative Home Care team. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Parkinsons Canada in Pat’s name.
The Funeral will take place on Tuesday, December 9 at 11:00 am, at St. Mary’s Parish, 10 River Heights Dr Cochrane.
