Shelagh Lindsay passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 22, 2026, after a long and courageous journey with Alzheimer’s disease, surrounded by her family, with her favorite music by Loreena McKennitt playing softly in the background. Shelagh is survived by her beloved husband, Lyle Caldwell; her children, Sean Caldwell and Bree Caldwell, Bree’s husband, Jacob Wood; and her cherished grandchildren, Greyson Wood and Madilyn Wood. We are deeply grateful to the staff at Bethany, Cochrane, for the compassionate care they gave her.
Shelagh was born on July 21, 1950, in Halifax, and moved with her family to Calgary before she began school. After completing an undergraduate degree in microbiology and beginning graduate studies in the same field, she went on to earn her medical degree from the University of Calgary. Shelagh devoted her life to caring for others as a family physician, serving the communities of Mînî Thnî and Cochrane. Medicine was never just a career for Shelagh; it was a calling. She made house calls when people needed her, helped anyone for any reason, and treated her patients with the same care she gave her family.
Shelagh and her husband, Lyle, made their home on an acreage west of Cochrane, where they lived since 1980. Their home was always open and welcoming; a safe haven for family and friends alike. Many of Bree’s and Sean’s friends found comfort and care there, looked after by Shelagh like a second mom. The house was often filled with loved ones, laughter, and the quiet feeling of being safe and seen.
Family, friends, and patients remember Shelagh as free-spirited, intelligent, and fiercely independent, with a heart of gold the size of the world. Helping others was ingrained in her spirit, and she cared deeply for all living things. She was often found basking in nature, gardening, reading outside, and taking long walks through the forest, especially among the larch trees. She found joy swimming in the pond and caring for her animals, including the sheep she bottle-fed and took in from the pasture.
She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, patients, and all those whose lives were made better by her kindness, strength, and open heart.
Please join us for a come and go tea in memory of Shelagh on Saturday, March 7, from 1-4 pm, at the Cochrane RancheHouse, in Hall of Vision.
Thank you to everyone who loved her and helped shape the life she lived.
